The world of design is a beautiful thing. It’s filled with creation, art, and the immeasurable differences it can make within the lives of people it affects. Right now, there are over 32 million children suffering from hearing impairments. Answering the call to help, the innovative Huawei tech company has created a ground-breaking app called, Storysign, that teaches these children how to read. Driven by AI technology, this app is opening the doors to countless children into the world of literature and possibilities.
This is how it works. First, the child or parent opens the app and clicks on the selected book from the StorySign library. Then they hold their phone up to the words on the page, and our friendly avatar, Star, signs the story as the printed words are highlighted. This allows parents and children to learn to sign and read together, at their own pace.
StorySign is powered by Huawei AI, supported by charities including the European Union of the Deaf and the British Deaf Association, designed by Aardman Animations, with a classic children’s books from Penguin Random House.

Guiding them along their learning journey is an engaging avatar named Star. This friendly teacher has been brought to life by Aardman Animations and interacts seamlessly within the app. Her simple gestures and easy-to-follow instructions convey stories that allow children with hearing disabilities to follow along and learn through cutting-edge technology.
Available in the Google Play Store, Huawei AppGallery, and for free on Android, the Signstory App teaches in ten different sign languages including British, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese, Irish, Belgian Flemish, Swiss-German).
A deaf child can’t hear their parents read them a bedtime story. Or their teacher read words from a textbook. Plus, 90% of deaf children are born to hearing parents, some of whom do not know sign language. All of this means many deaf children struggle to match printed words with the things they represent, which has a big impact on their lives.

The news is filled with the latest iOS update and tech mergers, but too often, these truly important movements are overlooked. There is no way to calculate how important apps and programs like this are to the world. So take a minute, and see how important great design can be.
